Ancient History
Cleydael Castle, also known as Kasteel Cleydael, is a historic gem located west of Aartselaar in the Flemish region of Belgium. Its roots trace back to 1259 when it belonged to the Sanders van Hemessen family, gaining prominence in 1372 under the ownership of Geeraert van der Elst. Throughout the 16th century, the castle saw various owners, including Antonio del Rio in 1556, treasurer of seizures under Fernando Álvarez de Toledo. In 1576, it endured a siege by the troops of the States General of the Netherlands, led by Philip de Lalaing, resulting in plunder and the fleeing of Del Rio to Spain. The castle then housed vagabonds until 1592.
Later History
In 1613, the Hellemans family acquired Cleydael Castle and embarked on significant restoration efforts. Over subsequent centuries, the castle changed hands until the aftermath of WWI, when an Antwerp ship owner purchased and restored it in the 1950s.
Present Times
Today, Cleydael Castle stands as a square, moated structure with a rich history. Its square tower, the oldest part, is complemented by three round corner towers. The rectangular bailey, once moated until 1806, adds to the castle's allure. Currently, the castle is privately owned and serves as an exclusive venue for parties and dinners. The surrounding domain has been transformed into a golf club, utilising the bailey's buildings as its clubhouse. While the castle itself is not open to the public, its rich history and picturesque setting make it a captivating choice for events.
